A fun quote about mint security - 1851

2 posts in this topic

"Recently, the Mint has had double the amount of work to do and had coined $500,000 (2-1/2 million francs) in gold within the last few days. [seeing this river of gold,] I expressed worry about its safety and the honesty of the hands through which so much gold passes. The answer was: 'If a few pieces were taken it does not matter; but this seldom happens. Whoever will steal small sums, will soon commit a larger theft and then he will be inevitably detected. Indeed, it is generally easier to abstain than to contain.'"
