25th anniversary silver eagle sets - NGC 70 questions?

28 posts in this topic

I almost didnt even post this question because of all the drama any topic about the 25th anniversary sets cause, but hopefully the drama can remain else where.

I purchased 5 sets and recieved them yesterday. I purchased the 5 sets so that I could send them all in for certification with the hopes of being able to put together one perfect 70 set for my personal collection. I know getting 70s is a gamble (AND I HATE sending coins in without even looking at them) but purchasing a 70 set is simply going to be way to expensive.

My question is what is the average number of coins out of 25 that would likely return as 70? (I know its impossible to say for sure, just wondering about the average).

And what if by chance there was an error coin.... I would think such a coin would be extremely valuable. But since I havent seen the coins.... is everyone at NGC 100% honest. (Truly HATE sending in coins I havent looked at).

Thanks for your thoughts. Please no Drama.

Oh and my 5 sets (25 oz of silver and OGP's) weighs 15lbs. I really want to open that freakin box, lol.

I was checking the Census on some other most recent moderns, and I was surprised to find that 70's were more frequent than 69's by anywhere from 2-to-1 to 3-to-1. I guess the Mint is improving their processing tecniques, and if this "trend" holds true, there are going to be a bunch of 70's for the 25th Anniversary sets.

I am not familiar with any collectors that purchase 5 sets.

There are people who believe that Modern sets have no value on a relative basis. I had a complete set of Modern Comms in both proof and uncirc and sent them to David Lawerence several months ago and they returned them saying moderns would ne hard to sell etc.

There are people who do not think that a 70 deserves the extra premium and there are people who believe it. The latter are usually the collectors and non dealers

I bought the 2006 anniversary set from the U.S. Mint. The Reverse Proof graded PF70. It decreased in value from $750 to $550 just before the 25th Anniversary. It is now $475 on Ebay. This is a 41% decrease.

The 2006 Reverse Proof in PF 69 is on Ebay for $225.00 so it is half the price of the PF70 ,however, it is unique as a reverse proof. Of course, it was the only Silver Reverse Proof and now there are two

The annual Silver Eagle did not increase much is price for a long time. The Majority of the increase in them is due to the increase in the price of silver. This includes the 70 unless you go back before the year 2000 .

I picked up all the 2011 releases before the release of the 25th anniversary in PF 70 for $100 or a little less. Considering that after purchasing from the Mint and getting if graded costs about $85 then this isn't much of a premium.

The 25th Anniversary set will fetch more with the special label so don;t open the box. The one with the S.F. mint mark and reverse proof will fetch more in 70 because they are unique,

I read where the modern coins in 70 grade was actually twice the mintage amount then the 69. This does not mean that the 69 will be worth more because they are fewer. It just means that the 70 will not be worth that much more because the grade is more common etc.

I'm still baffled as to why someone would pay these absurd premiums for a number on a label. When I look for a modern commem or something I first try to find it in original packaging, then I look for "lower" graded material such as 68 or 69 then go find the packaging on eBay. They are all pretty much the SAME so why pay more? If it for the Registry then I still don't see the attraction. If all of the coins are the same what distinguishes an MS/PR 70 from any of the 69s. Again, they all look the same. Geez....

If I were the OP and didn't get a set on "game day" then go look for a raw set at whatever price they are selling...or better yet wait until after Christmas.

You need not be concerned about someone at NGC switching coins on you.

Thanks for all the input. I will be sending them to NGC soon. Hopefully one full set of 70s will be returned.

I guess everyone has different opinions on the 69 or 70 grade. I myself prefer 70 graded modern coins. I like my modern coins as close to perfect as possible. I have seen many 69s that I completely understand why they didnt achieve 70. Just a personal preference. I dont think you can go wrong either way. Collect what you like.

With that being said I would not pay the current 70 prices of these sets, but hopefully NGC will return one to me.

Chris,

I would imagine that the 70s appear more common than 69s for two reasons: some submitters cherrypick the best coins for their submissions, and some bulk dealers request that only 70s be graded. It is impossible to measure with certainty.

Chris-

New to the forum and only been collecting coins for about a year or so. I submitted 5 sets and 23 of 25 coins were graded a 70. I get the feeling I was extremely lucky but I think in general odds are high that you'll get that complete 70 set. Good luck and let us know what happens!

That is most likely possible for prior releases, but, how do you explain members sending in unopened sets and recieving mostly 70s without being able to "cherrypick" the contents?

One member submited 25 coins and 17 came back as 70s, a member in this thread sent in 10 coins with 9 coming back as 70s, and another member in this thread sent in 25 coins with 23 of them coming back as 70s and yet another member here had 14 70s out of 25 coins submitted (posted a few minutes ago).

If this continues in regards to the grades, none of the coins will have a decent value even with a limited mintage of 100,000 coins due to the sheer amount of MS/PF 70's that the submitters are recieving.

These 2011 set coins received special handling, different from the coins that go into rolls and into monster boxes that bulk dealers submit.

So what? There have been other issues released with special handling and none of them received 70's for 75-90% of them. With that many graded 70, the prices that people are paying for them is a joke! Don't expect them to hold their value for too long.

The coins were clearly handled differently than other issues have been in the past. That is the only explanation of the superior quality of the coins. Coins downgrade by making contact with one another; many of these coins did not.

The prices are already down to $2000 per set, and that is a sustainable number, considering the 2006 sets are at $1300-1800.

On the basis of the early population reports, both of the major grading services have awarded a preponderance of 70s to the 5 coins in this set, with the obvious explanation, as stated by a couple previous posters, that the quality of these coins was generally high, despite the inadequate packing of the sets inside the boxes. Exactly who did the packing, was it the US mint, or was it PBGS, their distributors located in Indiana?

Hi BNC, Welcome to the NGC forums! You got 11 70s out of 25 submissions, and all the rest are 69s, with no 68s or lower, so although your results are below average, they're not really so terrible. You might be able to work on trades to where you can get two sets of 70s.

Here's a few questions for you: When you received and handled the box, did you notice any shakes, rattles or rolls? Anything clanking around inside? And when you sent the box to NGC, was it inside another box, and if so, was it packed in such a way that the address label was facing up, and not to the side? What carrier did you use to send?

My grading was terrible IMO, 5 sets sent in 1 set of proof 70,

For the life of me, I don't understand why some of you are blaming NGC for your bad luck. The next time you decide to go duck hunting or deer hunting, try closing your eyes before you swing your rifle or shotgun around to shoot.

I sent in 5 sets also. I got 15 out of 25 in 70 grade. 2 sets of 70. (just missed on a 3rd)

Looking at the POP reports all coins are grading at 70 at above 70% except for the Rev PR which is just under 66%.

This means...we are all going to have a bunch of 70 sets....that aren't going to be worth near as much as we thought!!!!!

Still going to be worth alot more than $299 plus Grading fees though!!!!

Special Handling?? Like dropped on the floor, stepped on, kicked around the parking lot and improperly packaged. ha ha ha.. (please identify the sarcasm)

So many coins display some nasty marks. Ive seen pictures posted everywhere. How can a coin with a deep gouge make it out of the mint? How about all the coins with alot of major rim damage? They didnt recieve special handling. Alot of coins were abused at the distribution center.

Well Let me ask u all this take a look @ my grading serial#s, They were sent in as sets and should have been graded as sets,Should also have been eligable for a multi coin slab,

On The other side, The Coins Are Stunning in the high scratch restance holders the mount for the coin is very nice and the labels are Beautiful, A real ehancement to the coin.

It's my understanding that each coin is numbered in succession by denomination. If you had submitted just one set, they would be numbered 1-5, but if you submitted more than one set, they would be numbered by style, i.e. PF 1-5, REV PF 6-10, etc.

NGC stopped using the multi-coin holders for everyone except dealers, and I think there may even be a minimum quantity required for them.

These results are excellent for blindly submitted silver eagles, though many from these sets graded 70. The difference between 69 and 70 is that 70s are supposed to have no post-mint surfaces distrubances. MS69s will have tiny to moderate marks.

If these sets were abused, imagine how the grading goes on the coins taken from monster box rolls.

The proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the large number of 69 and 70 grades being given. Actually, the vast majority of the flaws people are talking about are mint-made imperfections that they are not familiar with. 99% of the flaws I saw on the 15 sets I purchased (and no, not from the mint) were mint-made anomalies that do not affect the grade. These coins all have a unique finish, the frosted proofs are computer etched, and the bullion coins from S, W had a satin finish, which highlights breaks in that finish. The question then is, what are those breaks?

I saw coins with spots of missing satin. At a glance, this looked like chatter in the fields, yet the coins were graded 70. Then I looked again, and the exact flaw was repeated on each coin from that mint. And sure enough, you can tell under magnification that these flaws are as struck, not chatter marks. The frost breaks were on the die.

I saw many tiny strike through dents. These are also as-made, and will not affect the grade. It is hard to tell them apart from tick marks at a glance, but under magnification, the flow lines are visible inside strike-throughs. I wonder how the graders can grade so many of these without mistaking strike-throughs for tick marks, and vise versa, but they do an excellent job.

There are coins that had small dents, or breaks, in the rim, which were repeated on the other coins from that mint. These were NOT tick marks, they were die defects that do not affect the grade, and I have seen them before on silver eagles. Again, you can see the flow lines.

Many people expect modern coins to be perfect, and thus, any imperfection is therefore a tickmark or other post-mint damage. That, simply, is not always the case.

My 5 sets have been graded. I received 17 70s & 8 69s. 3 complete 70 sets. 1 mixed set & a 69 set. I can't wait for them to arrive. I was so excited about it I called my wife to tell her about it. She responded the way I would respond to her if she told me that so & so is having a shoe sale this weekend. ;( Anyway I'm happy, Woooohoooo!

I just recieved imaging response on my 5 Sets. 18 out of 25 we're 70's. I'm pretty happy about that. Now all I have to do is wait on them to get here.

I am going to be selling some of these sets, but I DO NOT use Ebay. I will have to figure out the safest possible way of getting Paid First.
