bass collection ?

6 posts in this topic

I have a NGC graded 1907 D half eagle with the "Bass" designation, what kind of premium (if any) would this bring. And any info on who Bass was and his significance in the coin collecting world, would be much appreciated.

thanks, Nick

harry bass was the ultimate gold coin collector, he has the only complete set of three dollar gold pieces with the unique 1870-s finishing his set and making it unique

his exploits with ted natz of large cent fame and sheldon's stealing of ans large cents and the dislike of harry then ans prez and ted are legendary

on your coin i really dont think the bass pedigree means much of anything but it cant hurt

The Bass pedigree is an important one for collectors of classic gold or numismatic literature. Depending upon the grade of your coin, the pedigree should be worth an extra 15-20%. Ted Naftzger's run-ins with Harry Bass stem from Naftzger's gold-collecting days. Naftzger's gold collection was auctioned off in the early 1970's, and he is remembered for assembling the finest large cent collection ever (as far as condition is concerned).

Back when I was able to work, I was Harry's personal security. Through that association, I learned a great deal from him . A very smart man, but not without some character flaws in business dealings. All in all, he will always be remembered as an Icon in Numismatics.
