What happens when they're gone?

Someday the penny will be discontinued. How do you think this will happen? Does the mint or some agency give a time period to trade them in? Do they make them no longer legal to own? They lost money making them, will they want them back to recoup some of the loss? What happens to there collectable value when you can't get your hands on them? What do they do with billions of coins that no longer have a purpose? Should you start collecting the "higher" grades? They are technically owned by the govt.,can they make them no longer collectable to ensure they can reclaim them? Any thoughts? Does anyone want to put in their 2 cents?

Mailman,

There have already been a few designs at variations of cents that are no longer used. There is no recall on them they simply melted what they got in and the rest we collect.

1/2 cent

Large cent

3 cent

20 cent

Where are the millions of 1800s coins that were minted? Some have a melt count but you can bet that there should be a very large list that was never presented.

Don't worry, the government will not ask for your pennies. They will just disappear from circulation without explanation pertaining to melt profits or the dates of melted coin counts.

HAPPY COIN COLLECTING---
