Green in lines of a gold Half Eagle

4 posts in this topic

Will NGC grade and encapsulate a gold Half Eagle with a small amount of dark green coloring in the fine lines of the coin? I know that it is a normal reaction of some kind but is it considered active contamination such as PVC?

junior e,

Thank you for your question.

A small amount of surface debris (e.g. grease or dirt) is OK and won’t prevent a coin from being graded. Active PVC contamination, surface residues and heavier encrustation will prevent a coin from being graded and/or encapsulated. The tolerance here is minor and depends on grade and overall appearance, as well as the exact type of encrustation. In many cases, conservation prior to grading might be preferable.

A tiny amount of verdigris would not necessarily cause a coin to be Details graded (it could still be numerically graded), but it of course it is impossible to be certain without examining the coin in person.

Thank you for your question.
