1955: Cut-off date for Moderns

2 posts in this topic

An acquaintance asked me why 1955 was selected as the cut-off date between the Modern and Economy tiers, and I couldn't give him an answer. Was there a specific reason why 1955 was chosen, or is it pretty much an arbitrary date?

Thanks and best wishes to all for the holiday season.

Chris,

Thank you for your question.

NGC originally did not grade United States coins after 1964. When modern coins became eligible for submission, NGC made the decision to push back the cut-off 10 years before 1965 to make certain Mint and Proof sets eligible for the discounted rate. Therefore, instead of 1965 being the cut-off, 1955 was chosen. This date has been the cut-off for modern coins for more than a decade.
