9 posts in this topic

I need more information on this,I have a St Patrick Farthing ,but it is on a large planchant, pretty much same size as the Half penny. It was graded by NGC VF Corrosion.I wish the weight would of been put on the label. It was found in Ireland,by my friend who was metal detecting.Has anyone else seen one similar with a Large Planchet for a Farthing not Halfpenny. It is for sale so you can check it out at the Heritage Coin Auction in December,in Houston

If anyone has seen one like this before please let me know,Having a hard time finding one the same. You can see the size difference on the Heritage website between the other farthings and mine. Thanks

They are certainly scarcer than the smaller planchet variety, but tend to come struck on nicer stock, too. Therefore, whereas a "corroded" disclaimer is practically meaningless on a so-called "farthing", it is a more significant detriment than for a small-planchet type.

I say "so-called" because most researchers today believe the coins were in fact denominated the same. So again, while technically not "very rare", you definitely have a coin with much better demand! Congratulations!

This would be accurate if the OP was describing one of the large diameter pieces referred to as a Halfpenny in the Redbook.

But he isn't. The OP's piece was struck with farthing (i.e. smaller sized) dies on a larger than normal planchet nearly the diameter of a Halfpenny.

I don't recall seeing another such specimen, but perhaps others have.

I was also referring to the so-called "farthing", which is known to have been struck on planchets of the two different sizes. Is my memory confused on this? I know the halfpennys are routinely struck on nice planchets, but I thought I remembered that the large-sized "farthings" come on nicer stock than their small-planchet siblings.

I'll pull down some of my old C4 and EAC catalogs tonight and see if I can find out more for the OP.

I have searched some auction archieves(Heritage Auctions Website),and I have not found any St Patricks Farthings with this larger size planchet

You are unlikely to find them in more generic auctions like Heritage. As a specialty item, they are more likely to show up in sales geared toward copper specialists.

Since you have stated that the item is yours and for sale, your posts on this and the PCGS forum, essentially amount to spam.

And if the information you are seeking is so important, the time to obtain it was before you bought the item or before you consigned it, not afterwatrds.

this is not spam,I am a new coin collector, and I noticed after seeing all the St Patricks farthings on their Heritage sales /Auction site that my Farthing is larger than all the rest.So to myself I did some quick research and could not find another one with the large planchet.,.This was found by my friend metal detecting in Ireland ,so please do not be so harsh to judge.Thank You Mike
