Fingerprints can sometimes be removed while at other times be reduced in appearance. The acids and oils that make up fingerprints can etch into the surface metal of a coin sometimes making their complete elimination impossible though steps could be taken to prevent them from becoming worse in the future.

Coins already certified are evaluated prior to conservation in part to determine if conservation work is possible and beneficial but also to attempt to predict the grade of the coin after work is done. If the evaluators feel that there is a risk to the currently stated grade at least staying the same after conservation, then the coin would not be conserved.
