What's the deal with toned coins, why is it highly desireable?

 

Ignorance is bliss but I'm really looking for an honest answer. They are pretty but like tanning on a comic, I'd think heavy toning would reduce value? Obviosly I'm wrong.

 

I've got around 40 Kennedy and Franklin halves that my granny gave me over 25 years ago and there is toning on many. I need to learn about this stuff.
