1864 Mexico - 8 Reale Question

1 post in this topic

While this post pertains to the coin in the subject, it is "what" is on the coin I am trying to understand. The coin has "M. Gibbs" chopped/stamped into the surface on the date side (not sure which is obv and rev). I have tried researching this on the net but with no success. My guess is this is like a chop mark to sample the coin's authenticity/content (silver) or to mark it as being used in some form of commerce by a specific trader, etc. Just thought I would throw this out here in hopes anyone may have an idea or suggestion about this marking. Thanks.
