Question for IHC collectors

7 posts in this topic

In general, do you think that a CAC sticker or Rick Snow's Photoseal sticker is most indicative of a solid coin for the grade? Second, regardless of opinion of the first question, which would one expect to add more "retail value"?

Rick's Photoseal has much more value than CAC's for IHC's IMO. They are one of Rick's specialties. I have an IHC that I'm sending to Rick on Saturday for his review and Photoseal if he deems it worthy. :)

Rick Snow is a passionate numismatist who has specialized in a narrow focus of the market for decades. CAC evidently has no area of specialty, since they sticker coins from almost any series (except moderns). There's not even a hint of question here whose opinion I would trust most with regard to small-cents!!!!

Would you rather have a general mechanic, or a transmission specialist guess why your car has trouble shifting gears at high speed?

Besides, in my personal experience, CAC has a unacceptable track record with regard to early copper, and this might lead me to suspect their success rate with small copper. No, this isn't a slam, it's just what I have observed. And, I have noticed that coins with the Eagle Eye photoseal bring significant premiums at auction.

There is no question in my mind that I would much rather have Rick Snow's approval of an Indian than CAC's. As to which certification would bring more money, I have never sold any of the coins I have bought from Rick, so I could not say. I would feel that they would be pretty equal to those knowledgeable of the coin series. Rick is a specialist in this series without equal, in my opinion, and I doubt many would disagree. So to speak, "He wrote the book" on the series many times. Try picking up the phone and calling CAC and asking them a question, I have many times done so with Rick and have spoken to him most of those times. He is very generous with this knowledge and his time and I, for one, appreciate that.

Jim, next time, before you assume the answer about "Try picking up the phone and calling CAC and asking them a question", perhaps you should try it. I know many collectors who have done so and have had their questions answered (in a very patient and informative manner) by John Albanese at CAC.

Rick deemed my 1897 worthy of his Photo Seal. On to Mark Goodman for a proper image.
