New Australian Sets - Some Good, Some Pointless, Some Missing!

5 posts in this topic

Hello, at last, some Australian Predecimal sets! But only some?

New sets added include Crowns, Florins and Shillings, but no Half Pennies, Pennies, 3 Pence or 6 Pence? It's the lower denominations that are probably the most collected of all predeimals - just look at the NGC registry data and this will become pretty obvious. Add to that - the 1923 half penny and 1930 penny are two icons of Australian Numismatics - you've just got to have these sets!

Just lastly - Proof sets for Shillings and Florins are completely pointless. They're so scarce, I can't belive anyone would seriously take on these sets. My suggestion (and I do specialise in Australian coins) is to add the missing predecimal sets and leave the proof sets out. Would be nice to see a predecimal type set at some point - but that's a wish list item, not a must have at this point!

Thanks

Your comments on the predecimal proof sets are equally applicable to South Africa Union but they are still there anyway. For the sets dated 1926-1936 and 1938-1939, the mintages are between 12 and 62. And most of the coins almost never come up for sale anyway even for someone who has the money to buy them. There is one collector who has a set for them but they have the best private collection of this series in the world.

Wow, these sets !! good stuff keep it up NGC. MUST have all the early proofs included. People collect these !! They are the best investment performers in the Australian market except for early pre decimal banknotes.

The site I mentioned once has detailed info, greensheet or bluesheet. You could use greensheet and bluesheet pricing comparisons to work out how better to give points ;) by value, since Australia grade or US grade, the price is the same for the same coin on the bluesheet/greensheet guides.
