Help With This Morgan...

9 posts in this topic

I came across this 1884-O Morgan Dollar in an old Whitman album the other day and need help deciding if it is real or not. The "O" does not look like an "O" other than it is round...but rather looks more like a Full Moon! I checked VAMWorld and couldn't track it down. I would love it if you guys could tell me something about this coin. Hope my photos are okay. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.

Looks to me that you have a nicely struck 1884-O Morgan with Reverse damage. Nothing I see looks like it occured during minting. Look at the "E" in ONE and the "D" and "O" in DOLLAR, The mint mark as well as the lower leaves of the wreath appear to have been mechanically flatened.

The magnified image is great. Wish I could do as well.

I'm sure some of the more experienced members will give you their opinions

t looks like a bag mark right on top of the mint marked mushed it all together...if I am not being too technical lol I don't belive it's a die variety but rather normal damage from coming into contact with other coins in a bag. (thumbs u

If it was a grease-filled die, you wouldn't see the m/m at all.

It is either a filled die chip or PMD, but I'd have to see a better close-up of the m/m first.

It may be post damage but it with or without the damage, it looks to be a "filled" oval mint mark. Popular filled mint marks in an 84-O is a Vam 4 or Vam 39. I have one considered a Vam 39. A pretty basic coin with no extingishing marks. It does have doubling in the arrows and the letters States. Here are several photo's to see if they match up.
