Code explanation

Will NGC send me an explanation of the numbers that appear above the bar code on their coin holders? I know that "92" on a PCGS holder means that the coin was cleaned...What do the NGC numbers mean?

The numbers that appear above the bar code on an NGC invoice are simply its certification number -- a unique serial number assigned to that coin by NGC. We maintain a database of all the coins that we've certified since 1987. Since October 2008, we've been imaging all the coins submitted to us under our tier services. Images and certification information can be found on NGC's website using a coin's unique serial number. You can read more about online certification verification here: NGC Online Verification Instructions

The NGC bar code does include encoded grade information for individuals and companies that wish to use the bar code for inventory purposes, however, grade information never appears in code only on the NGC holder. If a coin has been deemed improperly cleaned by NGC, the phrase "Improperly Cleaned" will appear on the label beneath the coin's Details Grade. Descriptions of these terms can be found here: Details & Surface Condition Glossary
