Colonial African Coin

3 posts in this topic

Hoping someone can help me!

I have a small coin that I received in the mail many years ago, along with a few sets of mint stamps.

The envelope says "B-4 Colonial African Coin Port. Mozambique Price $595 20 Centavos Coat of Arms Collectible Pre-independence coin from one of the last held Portuguese Overseas Terr. All stamps guaranteed genuine - please do not break set, Jamestown Stamp Co, Jamestown NY 14701-0019"

Can anyone tell me the potential current value of this item?

It would help a lot if you had told us the date on the coin. The pictures aren't clear enough to really make out much. I can tell you the 595 is either a company catalog number or it's $5.95 There are only two 20 centavo coins that have significant value, the 1936 and 1941 issues. But on both of those the word CENTAVO runs straight across and I can tell that on yours it is significantly curved.

That means it is either KM 75 1949 or 50, KM 85 1961, or KM 88 1973 or 74.

Values in Unc (new and unworn) are as follows

1949 $10

1950 $8.5

1961 $2.50

1973 $7.5

1974 $9

Now these are retail values and you might get half of those values if you are able to find an interested buyer.

I bought a small collection of certified mint state Portuguese colonies coins a few years ago from Scotsman and flipped them on eBay for a small profit. Here are three interesting Mozambique ones...
