This is a Temporary Position not to exceed 1 year, these appointments usually are for 6 months and then they just turn you loose. Gearing up at the West Point Mint...maybe you bullion collectors WILL get your proof this year after all.

Actually, these jobs for Lockheed Martin with the US Mint are part of the new SOW add on to the contract they won for operations and maintenance (O&M) in 2008. Lockheed had taken over the Mint's O&M functions in March 2008 and their primary mission was to help the Mint fix upgrade its workflow processes. This SOW now changes that contract to allow Lockheed to do more development, specifically with their website and online catalog/ordering system.

If you want an idea of things that might be in the Mint's future thanks to Lockheed, see the new America the Beautiful Quarters website. This was done by Lockheed.

Yes, the SOW was awarded to begin in March and is only one year. However, the original award was for a firm fixed price (FFP) contract for just over $1 million for one year. These contracts are extended all of the time, especially if the contractor is doing a good job since it is easier on the agency to renew the contract. The fact that Lockheed is hiring like crazy for positions with the US Mint is a good sign.

Edited to add: If you look at any of the jobs through the Lockheed Website, they are marked with the requisition type of "Task Order/IDIQ." In federal contract speak, IDIQ is Indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity meaning it is an open ended contract to provide a wide range of services for the US Mint. As long as Lockheed continues to perform to the Mint's satisfaction, there should be nothing to worry about if you apply for these jobs.
