QUESTION: What is the difference between an American star and an English star?

Apparently, the rays on an English star are of different length, while those of an American star are of the same length. However, these *don't* seem to be common terms. If I'm right (or even if not), could you post a reference that discusses these star types? Might as well learn something here...
