NGC grading designations throughout the years

2 posts in this topic

Dear NGC,

Could you provide one quick, centrally located listing of all the designations that NGC has used throughout the years, including definitions? For instance, I know that NGC didn't count 5 step Jefferson Nickels as "Full Step" until April 2001. Could you clarify the following designations, including the years employed and any expansion or narrowing of the application of such designations:

(FT or FB Roosevelt Dimes)

(FS NIckels - any other variations other than those mentioned above)

introduction of " * " grade

End of "W" Designation and replacement with star

FBL Franklin Half Dollars

Any other major full details, premium quality, or eye appeal designation

Thanks for your time and consideration.

FT stands for Full Torch and has been used since 2003

FS stands for Full Steps and was used for 6-Step coins since the early 1990s until 6FS replaced it; this and 5FS were adopted around 2005

The Star stands for superior eye appeal and was introduced in 2001 and applied to various coin series in stages; it is now applicable to all deserving coins except those grading 70

T for Toned and W for White were used in 2000 and discontinued soon thereafter

FBL stands for Full Bell Lines and has been used for halves since the early 1990s
