SMS stands for Special Mint Set, the term the U. S. Mint used to describe its quasi-proof coins sold in 1965-67. It has been applied to certain other coins that are hybrids between normal MS pieces and true proofs, such as the Uncirculated Set coins sold by the Mint since 2005.
