1828 Thaler, Mint Error or Damage

2 posts in this topic

I recently purchased an 1828 Bavaria, 1 Thaler, Ludwig I, “Segen des Himmels”. When I received the coin I noted some damage to the words "Luwig" and "Bayern". At first I thought this might be solder marks, but after reading an article on Dirt in the Dies, I suspected that this might be dirt, grease, metal filings that were stamped into the coin when it was made. I was thinking about sending the coin in for grading.

The fact that these marks are at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions is likely more than a coincidence. It suggests that this coin formerly had a pin mounting so that it could be worn to show the other side. It would be Details Graded only.
