Swiss Basel Double Taler

3 posts in this topic

I bought this coin last week for $10, so it's a safe bet that it is not the real thing...

As far as I can tell this is a replica of an undated Swiss Double Taler from Basel.

(Dav-1742A; Dav-Son-588; KM-130. 57.1 grams.)

Obverse: City view with seven ships in harbor.

Reverse: Eight shields around, in center basilisk holding city arms.

As mentioned I bought this from a Canadian seller who sold it as a “commemorative”. My best guess is that it's a Chinese counterfeit.

Here is the real thing from a recent Goldberg auction...

What is the meaning of "HF 1958" under the basilisk on the copy?

Is this actually a commemorative after all? And for the record I normally do not buy Chinese "replicas" but this one was so nice...

I don't think it is a chinese copy. My bet is the HF is the engravers monogram and the 1958 is when the copy was made.

That seems to be the general consensus, thanks for the input!

(Worth about $32 in silver, not bad for $10...)
