Major smash and grab in central NJ

19 posts in this topic

My car was broken into a few hours ago in Pine Brook, NJ.

Taken was virtually the entire inventory including several significant coins.

I believe that this may have been done with a tracking device on the car as I was returning to MD from Coinfest in Stamford, CT, where I may have been targeted.

If you are offered any great coins from an unknown source, please contact me as I have a pretty good feel for what was in the inventory, but do not have any complete lists.

There were common gold coins, bullion, currency, etc.

Many thanx for any assistance that you can extend to me.

Julian

This is terrible news. I hope that you are unharmed and that no one who might have been with you was harmed, either. Without question I will be looking for these coins.

I hope your coins were insured. Not that it will solve the crime but at least you can recover from this monetarily. If you think you were targeted they may have video surveillance at the Hotel. I assume you parked in the garage , I am sure they have video cameras recording every vehicle that goes in and out of the garage as well as video cameras throughout the garage recording at each level. If someone put a GPS on you vehicle they may have video of it .

When I left Coin Fest Saturday I did not see one security person in the garage. They should provide full time security for all the dealers and attendees in that garage.

ARGH! Julian, that is absolutely HORRIBLE! I am so sorry to hear of this disastrous misfortune. It could not be more unfair.

Can you give any clues as to what may have been stolen? Knowing your inventory, it would only be high-caliber coins, but can you give any specifics?

I'll be at the Silver Dollar Show in a few days and will be glad to keep an eye peeled.

Many thanx for your thoughts, wishes, and assistance. There were over 1000 coins including 300 slabs and a complete list is impossible. If you have any suspicions of coins being offered to you, I will be available, 301 785 5640, and have a pretty good memory for many of these items. There was currency and foreign coins, including gold. Please give me a call if you have any suspicions.

Best

Julian

Sorry for your loss.....the thieves should be found and fully prosecuted.

Maybe a few key or unique holdings may help us on the forum to locate the perptrators.

A thought and I am sure the police are already all over this .

There should have been a security camera inside the Hotel at the entrance to Coin Fest . Did they have security cameras inside the bourse floor ??

You were obviously targeted and one would think that these people may have looked over your coins at various times. Coin Fest also has a sign in sheet inventory of all the people who attended the show. We all had to sign in. There should be a video record of every individual who attended the show. It is a lot of work but if they have video they can cross check the list and determine who signed the sheet with their real names and who did not and narrow things down that way.

It is also possible that you were followed when you left Coin Fest and that a tracking devise was not used. Do you remember anything strange or anyone following you when you left ?? I must assume the dealers had armed security guards escorting them to their vehicles.

Another thought just crossed my mind – it is possible this could be an inside job with someone who worked at the hotel.

I should note that a reward fund has been raised from dealers and collectors that now totals over $100,000.

Julian is a national treasure, and exemplifies the best in the coin dealer profession - in every sense of the word.

As a result, folks are rallying to his side like nothing I have seen before in all my years in the business.
