Handy PL Gauge

Use the gauge in this image to grade the degree of proof-likeness on any Morgan silver dollar. Print the image and stand the coin on its edge, right on the red line. It will now be at a 90 degree angle (i.e., perpendicular) to the image. Place a 60 watt incandescent lamp 18 inches directly above the coin and image. From 12 inches away and at a 45 degree angle, look at the surface of the coin. The reflection of the highest proof-like grade that a person with normal eyesight can clearly read within the coin's surface, is the proof-like grade which applies to that coin.

NOTE: If the coin is moderatly to heavily toned, it may be somewhat difficult to see through the toning. Therefore, at first, it is best to use the gauge only with untoned coins. Eventually, you will be able to grade the "proof-likeness" of most toned and untoned coins without using the gauge.
