Crack in the V?

I would describe the cracks as appearing at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. This is not unusual for any coin of the period, especially those made in the hard, copper-nickel alloy.

The planchets were bought from Scoville Company and some batches were harder to work than others. In 1895 there were citizen complaints about nickels being brittle and breaking in half.
