1982 proof set

3 posts in this topic

I haven't seen any of them (which probably answers my question), but does NGC grade the treasury coin in the 1982 proof set that filled the Susan B slot?

I'm just curious as what happens(ed) to those when people broke the sets for grading

There were 3,857,479 of these Department of Treasury tokens manufactured for the 1982 proof sets. No, they have not ever been graded by top tier companies, I’m sure some self slabbers have touted them as collectable, but once you have one, your covered for the entire series.

They end up in coin dealers junk boxes and I’ve seen them being sold on e-bay by proof set crackers in lots. Since they are not monetized and also considered modern, they do not command any premium.

Maybe one day, say, 2099 they might one day become collectable. Here’s a ground floor opportunity for hording.
