My coin finds for the weekend

10 posts in this topic

I came across this lot of coins over the weekend at a garage sale.

These are the first error coins I have been able to add to my collection. What would have been a fair price for this lot? All coins are in uncirculated condition.

A couple of off center pennies.

Would this nickle be considered broadstruck or off center or both?

Broadstruck dime.

Clipped Quarter, it also has a tilted partial collar. Is this normal for a clipped coin or is this a double error?

The nickel looks off center to me.

The off center coins are probably worth $3 or so each, since they aren't that far off center. I have posted my 85% off center penny a couple of times, and I got that for $6. The broadstruck dime is probably worth $10 or so.

By far the coolest is the quarter. It does not appear to be a tilted partial collar, just a regular partial collar. With a tilted partial, the reeding is very narrow on one side, and almost completely there on the other side (because the coin was actually tilted in the collar). Yours appears to have an even amount of offset around the whole coin. No, this is not typical of clipped errors, as the two are completely unrelated. The clip occurs when the press is cutting planchets out of the strip, the partial collar occurs when the coin is being struck. I really don't know how much this one is worth - the clip alone would probably be worth in the $25 range, but with the partial collar?

Anywhere around the $40-50 range is very acceptable. The cents are about $2.50 a pop, nickel about $5, the dime is a bit more scare at $7-10, and the quarter is about $25-30, depending on the buyer, and proper attribution, which btw I believe you are correct on.

To physics, I used to specialize in errors, and the clip isn't quite worth as much as you had stated. I have a clipped quarter I picked up from another error specialist for $15, and my piece has a bit more missing. The combo of the clip and partial collar is what kicks the value of this piece up. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw that piece trade for up to $50, but also wouldn't be shocked if it was $25. It all depends on your buyer when it comes to errors, more so than with anything else IMHO.

Nice pickup.

Jeff, I only dabble in errors a bit, so you probably know a little more about them than I do. I just think they are cool.

I did some searching on Ebay, and found this 1967 SMS 63 partial collar with large clip, for $999: Link

This clip is about the same size as yours, and its going for $50: Link

This clip is quite a bit smaller, and its going for $18: Link

I feel rather confident in my $25 assessment of just the plain clip. It sounds like you got a good deal on yours, Jeff (and how many years ago was it? These things do change, although errors are not nearly as active as other niches) However, with the partial collar as well, its anybody's guess.

I would recommend contacting Fred Weinberg, one of the top error coin dealers, and see what he has to say.

So I guess $10 for the lot was pretty good then. :D

The Quarter is in fact a tilted partial collar, I just took a picture of a small portion of the edge but on the other side of the quarter it has full reeding.

Thanks for the information guys (thumbs u

phys, I got mine about 4 years ago, but still trade errors. I've actually showed my pieces to Fred at the ANA phoenix show last year. The reason that piece on the bay is 1k is the SMS. SMS errors are VERY scarce, as there was a limited 3 year window for them. That piece is also uncirculated, and bug's has seen better days.

Bug, for $10 you got a steal!! you could bring those to any error collector and get at minimum $25 more than likely a fair bit more.

Gratz,

Jeff

I beg to differ :) Somehow I messed up the settings on my camera, thus the grainy dark images. All 5 coins are Unc. If I can figure out how to get my cameras settings back to default I will be able to get some better pictures.

Alright! much nicer pics. That quarter is roughly an MS-62 give or take a few points. It doesn't appear to be an SMS, which is why it won't be comparable in value to the other piece we examined. As is I'd say anywhere b/w $50-200 is reasonable on that piece. Send her away to IGC, NGC, or ANACS, (IGC being my preference on error pieces). Slabbed your looking probably in the upwards of $100+, but again it always depends on the buyer. I think after certifying that piece you should show pics to Fred Weinberg as he may be interested in it.

Congrats again!

Jeff
