Is currency current?

Like, what is the meaning of the word currency? I supposed that paper money in supply is 'current' and old paper money destroyed by the bureau of engraving or whatever...but then, why aren't coins called 'currency'. I mean, they are currency...aren't they?

I guess currency can be used as a term of barter or a 'negotiable' instrument. In tribal africa, goats and chickens are used as currency. I guess you can say coins are currency also. In the numismatic world, I guess we need to define the two in more detail, so coin and currency. I don't think current and currency are interchangeable

Currency (IMHO) is any instrument used for trade or commerce.

Think of the current in currency as electric current. Something that goes back and forth in exchanges.
