Suspected Chinese counterfeit shilling

8 posts in this topic

I was browsing through some shillings on the bay, and saw this one. I didn't think it looked right, and then I noticed where the seller is. So give me your verdict - and beware! No series is safe anymore.

The first one is the suspected fake, and the second one is a genuine example from my collection, purchased from our good friend the daft Englishman.

I suspect it is fake as well but can't prove it. With wear and a little darker color it would probably pass easily unless the weight is wrong.

Some of the letters on the suspect coin look a little off. I also think that coin just looks too clean for a coin from the 1700s.

Clear fake.

Look at the bottom of the reverse, at the harp

See the 2 holes it is meant to have ? now look at the shape of harp and specifically the holes in it, in the first image.

Other things on the reverse look wrong too, such as the fleur de lys

the most obvious thing showing it as fake to me is that Georgious is spelled with a U instead of the standard V...also I always look for design "rotation"...his nose is clearly pointing towards the I instead of the G, showing the alignment/position of design elements to be off..

The letter placement and where his nose points can vary considerably from die to die I believe, given the hand punched elements. Just like the letters and stars on the Capped Bust Half.

But very good catch on the U-V thing. I didn't even notice that!
