Will NGC certify a Shipwreck 8R piece?

6 posts in this topic

NCS will evaluate it for a $5 fee but this is in addition to the grading fee assuming it is eligible. I would have to see the coin directly to make a better assessment but most shipwreck coins that I have seen have salt water corrosion which will disqualify them.

This one has the 'shipwreck effect' (salt water corrosion)

as seen in the top left picture. However, the silver quality is definitely above average, and has some fantastic color from spending a long time in a manilla envelope.

Please see pictures above.

Does this coin type even qualify?

If you are a big name company and plan on submitting thousands of pieces for a wrecksite you are salvaging yourself and you have all the supporting documentation that proves that you have salvaged it from that site then yes they will slab it and call it "shipwreck effect" instead of "Corroded and harshly cleaned" If you are just Joe Sixpack who wants to send in a single sea salvaged Spanish cob whose provenance can not be proven then, No. It will come back in a bodybag if sen to NGC, but NCS will put it in a holder as corroded and cleaned if it is genuine.
