Coin dipping

This typically refers to swabbing or bathing a coin in a mild acid solution to remove toning or spots. If done skillfully with a thorough rinsing afterward, it does not harm the coin. Such acids are intended for use with silver or gold coins, and they don't work well on copper or copper-nickel pieces, leaving them an unnatural color.
