Die Crack Affecting Grade?

3 posts in this topic

I have a 1922-D toned Peace with rather large die cracks on the obverse and reverse that I want to submit to NGC. Do die cracks usually affect the grade of a particular coin, even if die cracks are common to that date/series.

Thanks

Michael

No, Die Cracks and planchet errors are part of the die and striking process and, as such, are not included in the grading of the coin. Many 19th Century and earlier coins have Die Cracks. They did not get as many dies as Philadelphia. Therefore, they had to make do with what they had and use it for more strikes. As a result, you will see many die cracks and strike problems (i.e. weak strike on "O" mint coins) with the Branch Mint dies.
