fire damaged gold coin

2 posts in this topic

I have an 1854 $3.00 gold coin with nice details. It had solder on the reverse because of being attached to a money clip at one time. I tried to melt away the solder with a small butane torch which didn't work well. The solder just smeared over a wider area of the coin. Now the coin is all discolored because of the heat from the torch. Any hope of this coin being conserved, or any suggestions on what to do now, especially about the dark coloring.

Conservation may be able to help the color on your coin. The solder, however, is something that professional conservation will not be able to help. Once the coin is conserved, it could be authenticated and encapsulated as a piece that had once been part of jewelry.
