Whats going on with this 1858 LL Flying Eagle cent ?

Hi all .. just wondered if anyone can enlighten me as to why/how part of the last 8 is missing

Partial grease filled die, maybe?

It could be a filled die, or it could be a half hearted attempt to turn it into an 1856. If there are signs of tooling in that area when you look at it with a strong glass (10X or more), that might be the problem.
