How Many US Mint Coins This Year - Let Me Count the Kinds!

12 posts in this topic

Last year, for 2008, someone posted a humorous - yet sad - list of all the coins the Mint would be producing in 2008. It amazed me. Since I haven't seen anyone do it for this year, I thought I'd give it a shot. Please let me know of any ones I've missed and I'll add it to this post.

I think Tyler gets two First Wives this year as I remember seeing five First Wives coins listed.

Gee I guess we are going to have two Woodrow Wilson spouse coins too if that is true. Maybe the second Mrs. Wilson will get a president's coin of her own too. She was the de facto president after Wilson had his big stroke.

As that list of coins, too many coins, too little money for me. :tonofbricks:

Yes there are two Tyler first spouses so that adds two more, and I would think we will see at least four Lincoln cents in the original bronze composition, one for each of the four designs. (If you just had one which design would you use and why? Just makes more sense to do a version in bronze of each.) so that adds three more

Total 128 coins

If they decide to put bronze versions of the cents into the mint set as well that could potentially add another eight coins.

Alright, I've corrected Tyler's spouse(s). However, for the Lincoln cent, I was under the impression that the original composition version would be the original reverse design as opposed to one version per four designs. Can anyone clarify?

No it will NOT be the original reverse. The legislation calls for the original Lincoln design as appeared on the 09 cent but makes no mention of using the original reverse design.

SEC. 302. REDESIGN OF LINCOLN CENT FOR 2009.

(a) IN GENERAL.—During the year 2009, the Secretary of the

Treasury shall issue 1-cent coins in accordance with the following

design specifications:

(1) OBVERSE.—The obverse of the 1-cent coin shall continue

to bear the Victor David Brenner likeness of President Abraham

Lincoln.

(2) REVERSE.—The reverse of the coins shall bear 4 different

designs each representing a different aspect of the life of

Abraham Lincoln, such as—

(A) his birth and early childhood in Kentucky;

(B) his formative years in Indiana;

© his professional life in Illinois; and

(D) his presidency, in Washington, D.C.

The clause allowing the use of the original composition makes no mention of what the design on thm should be, but since it does not specify the original design it would seem that it should be either one or all of the new designs. And since it doesn't specify which design should be used I would think they will use all of them. Simple solution would be to use the copper composition for the cents in the silver proof set.

SEC. 304. NUMISMATIC PENNIES WITH THE SAME METALLIC CONTENT AS THE 1909 PENNY.

The Secretary of the Treasury shall issue 1-cent coins in 2009

with the exact metallic content as the 1-cent coin contained in

1909 in such number as the Secretary determines to be appropriate

for numismatic purposes.
