Reholdering & Old Style Labels

4 posts in this topic

Hi,

I just purchased a coin from someone who stated that it was "fresh back from NGC." The acrylic case appears to be new (it's clean and free of almost all scuffing) but bears an old style label (one without the NUMISMATIC GUARANTY CORPORATION text in the bottom border). To me, "fresh back from NGC" implies newly graded and certified. Therefore, I was surprised to see the old style label.

Does NGC replace old style labels with new when previously graded coins are submitted for reholdering, or do they reuse the existing label inside a new acrylic case? If they reuse the old label, is converting to new an option when reholdering?

In essence, I'm curious about the specific question but more generally am trying to determine if the seller was fibbing.

Thanks!
