836 R & W Robinson Massachusetts Hard Times Token

HT155

R-1

Extremely popular merchant card.

Robinson's Jones & Co. received the "American Institute Medal" for their metallic

buttons in the fall of 1833 and promptly issued these tokens to advertise their triumph.

The dies were cut by Edward Hulseman at about the same time that he cut the dies for HT70.

The first of the "I Take The Responsibility" Political tokens.

This premier button-making is now credited with manufacturing the earliest large circulation

Hard Times Tokens such as HT 70,25,152,153, and428.

The New York on all obverse dies pertain the location of The American Institute,

issuer of the Medal reproduced there.

1854 - 1857 Sam L. Hart & Co. Playing Cards

PA197A

Very unusual Merchant Card.

I have not seen one for sale on Ebay yet

Samuel Hart began his business in 1844 in Philadelphia as a stationer.

The firm name became Samuel Hart & Co. in or before 1849 when it was listed as

an importer of fine stationary and a manufacture of blank and playing cards.

In 1851 the firm began manufacturing steel pens

and in 1853 traveling bottles in leather cases and fancy mother of pearl articles.

But Hart was always best know for his playing cards.
