great/monster toned seated liberty half dimes also thick original white coins with great light toning in superb gem mintstate with the 1873-s being a plus plus plus!!

Why do you specify this date? The reason I ask is a few years ago I was buying my first MS half dime for my type set and ended up with an NGC MS-64 1873-s. It has pleasing original color but I wouldn't consider it "monster". I really like these tiny coins and have picked up a few more since then as my buget allows. Still, my 73-s is one of my favorites. smile.gif

I think that listing "monster toned" for many coinage series is really jumping on a bandwagon that is already too full and is ready to tilt over.

Original coins with positive eye appeal that make you smile.

The 73-S H10C is a grossly underrated date. It's on par with the 72-S (mm above, the tougher one), but with far less acclaim. That, presumably, is why michael is so bullish on that date.

for me the monsters are still good but they have to be really superb gem coins and then something you do not see everyday

what many to most all call monsters in todays market are not really and even if so they are not technically superb

there are still good solid buys out there for monster toned coins but they have to be REALLY SPECIAL

even most that many call monsters lets assume they come really close and even are monsters they are not good buys

as they are not monsters in terms of technical qualities or are seen with frequency

i guess i need to see the coin in question but i am sure tom that is you saw MY defination of a monster coin which would negate 90% of what many call monsters out there

then tom, i am sure you would change your mind!

evp you sum up my feelings on the 73-s halfdime really very well and also it is just plain non existant in gem mintstate and higher

it is the last date of the series and an s mintmark to boot and is well the magic Harry X Boosel date and a sexy date the 1873 to begin with and then add the s mintmark

wow 893applaud-thumb.gif

for example i happen to know someone who has a superb gem mintstate 1873-s halfdime that has thick skinned white crusty surfaces fully struck with the original light toning of rose that well makes this coin semi unique to unique in terms of combination of date grade and overall originality and super eye appeal

something you would look forever and never even see!

Yes, Michael, you wrote exactly what I was thinking in my response! thumbsup2.gif

I also agree with you in that I think more than 90% of what is currently described as monster toned would not be acceptable for that terminology should you be giving it out. smile.gif

tom you are right on for the original skinned coins that are lightly toned with grest eye appeal they are really undervalued and you see more of those than the monsters and at much better prices!! or i should say value

the monsters are good some are great buys like the series where the coins have not had huge increases and are still underapprecaited and do not have rabid demand as comapired to lincoln cents

and if some monsters are priced fairly that is great but some are really priced out of the stratsphere then i think they are neutral for buying unless you got someone who is trying to upgrade it then i really feel sorry for the end buyer!

i guess with everything else only time will tell!

IMHO, 1880-1899 Liberty Quarter Eagles in higher MS grades will increase in price as the new collector base expands and becomes more sophisticated. Look at the Pops., then try and find one
