Depending on what exactly counts, it could be one to three.

The Bank of Manhattan preceded the Bank of the United States. The Bank of Manhattan then bacame the Bank of New York. The Bank of New York then became the Bank of the United States. So, it was really only one bank, but had two names prior to the Bank of the United States.

The other bank to precede the Bank of the United States was the Bank of North America.

So:

1. The Bank of North America

Possibly 2. The Bank of Manhattan

Possibly 3. The Bank of New York

this is a poorly constructed question, or it's a trick. the first "the bank of the united states" became known later as the "first bank of the united states," which was followed by the "second bank of the united states," which was followed by "the bank of the united states" (basically, they revived the original name of the "first bank of the united states.") on top of all that, the original "the bank of the united states" replaced "the bank of north america," which was not authorized by act of congress. so, does that mean there were 0, 1, 3, or 4 banks before teh bank of the united states. heck if i know.

First Bank of the United States FEB 25 1791 thru 1811

Bank of North America chartered Dec 31- 1781 opened Jan 7 1882 became Wachovia Bank, N.A Wachovia still operates a branch at the northwest corner of 6th and Chestnut in Philadelphia, which was the original site of the Bank of North America. This branch is the longest continuously operating branch bank in the United States, operating in that location since 1781.

Second Bank of the United States. was a bank chartered in 1816

so if by asking total preceded the bank united states did you mean the first bank or the united states which my guess would be 0

or the second then my guess would be 2
