Grey Sheet Bid - 1903-o Morgan - MS65

13 posts in this topic

bid - $610, ask - $670. may 2008

i like the story behind that coin

I do too. Unforunately, bids are very inflated in all UNC grades, considering the population of these. There are many, many uncirculated rolls still in existence. It is one of the most common "scarce" Morgans out there!

( Interesting Story )

Shuddup You ! :kidaround:

I am still negotiating but here is the Story:

I am finding that Ebay dealers are now willing to negotiate OUTSIDE of Ebay's realms as they are now getting POWERSCREWED by them.

They are ending auctions early and seller and intereested party come up with a price to pay via check / mo.

I thought it was in and around there ( 610-670) as the seller was not willing to go below 600 and I did not want to pay 700 so I will probably buy this coin for 660 and he is paying SHI ...

The sellers pictures are way out of contrast so I was hesitant on posting them.

- Here are the pictures anyways since you asked and are so awaiting to see them :headbang:

The Seattle World's Fair had a Treasury exhibit with a huge cage containing raw Morgan Dollars. After the World's Fair all of these dollars were shipped to banks in Montana, Idaho and Utah. Q. David Bowers in his "Silver Dollars of the United States" book set estimates that 200,000 to 350,000 of 1903-O dollars were released to banks in these three states. Prior to this huge release in 1962-63, the 1903-O was one of the most scarce Morgan silver dollar dates. That is probably why people still pay a premium for them.

I wouldn't heavily invest in that coin long term... but look at that $50 jump in 4 months

It is part of my Investment Morgan set - filling gaps in my registry set as money permits. I cannot wait to see it in hand ... the seller says its undergraded and he only sold it because he upgraded his plastic for his registry. He could not tell the difference between the two.

If I may, I believe it was THE key back then, considered even rarer than the 1895 proof!

Now that I see this coin in hand - there is no DOUBT that the previous owner tried to get this coin upgraded as it is quite striking in appearance. The obverse has a couple MINOR brushes - in front of the nose and in front of the ear and in front of "unum" other wise a VERY "UN" new Orleans-like strike coin as it is struck very nicely.

The REverse is an OMG flat out 66/67 coin ... The strike for a New Orleans Coin is very suitable for MY COLLECTION. One little brush mark above the IGWT and that is it .. the fields are almost liquid like and tried to pick that out in the pictures. I am so tempted to break it out :) and resubmit but I wont ...
