FRENCH 1784 LUDOV XVI copper A mint mark

4 posts in this topic

Hi, Cookbook.

I'd be glad to help. Is it possible to post a picture of the coin. Or...can you describe the size of the coin and what it is made of. I'll check my catalogs and see if I can come up with anything that matches.

OldTrader. I believe that you are correct in your assessment that this coin is a 1 sol. The 1/2 sol pieces of 1784 do not have the "A" mintmark...as best as I can tell. That leaves the 1 sol coin. I couldn't find any 2 sol coins for 1784.

Cookbook, of course, depending on grade, your coin could range from $4 to $80 in value. As far as mintage, the issues of 1781, 1783, 1784, 1785 and the 1/2 sol of 1784 have a combined mintage of 97,000. The "KM" number for your coin is 578.1 and the "A" mintmark stands for the Paris mint.

Hope this is correct, and that it helps a bit.
