Upsetting Submission Results....

7 posts in this topic

These are all coins directly from mint sets. The Dimes were beautiful. I can't understand why any of them shouldn't have gotten a 65 and most deserved a 66+. Only 2 pennies got the kind of grades I was really hoping for. The 62 and 63 grades are and the "Obv Scratched" BB is bull.

I knew they wouldn't all be stellar, but come on. The goal was to fill the holes in some mint sets. Almost all of these will need to be replaced later, the BB prevents me from filling all the holes with this like I'd hoped, and most of these once replaced are probably going to be give-aways (but I'm sure some noobs will enjoy them eventually) .... 1 coin in the modern submission makes up 25% of the value.

I can give you a little insight. I do not even need to see either of these coins to guess right off the bat that "65" is very unlikely. These are both keys to their respective clad series, and the reason is that they are two of the worst produced "mint set" coins there are. Most of them came off the dies with bad planchets and lousy strikes, and instantly that almost always knocks them out of "gem" consideration. I am not the least bit surprised that they fared worse than you expected.

If anything, make this a terrific learning opportunity!

Actually , you did well with these older modern mint set coins.

The US Mint seems to have skilled laborers that are trained to pick out the worst possible coins from large bins to place into these sets. The mint set coins have some of the most impact marks and scrapes on them imaginable . I've had better circulation strikes from Bank Rolls than what I've found in official mint sets.

That being said , remember , just because they came from mint sets is absolutely no guarantee of high grade quality .....the norm seems to be coins that have been dumped in and out of hoppers and banged to oblivion and then placed into the holders by workers with sweaty fingers . Even now , with the new 'special finish' mint set coins, the quality has only gone up a little .

You still have to grade these coins the same as any others , before you send them in .

Also , if you did pre-grade them , did you make a master list with notes on each one , say ... listing the stike quality and location of marks for each coin? IF so , when they are returned to you ...go over them and see if you see what the graders saw and compare notes....you might learn a few things (that you didn't already know) which would be something you could get out of the fees you paid.

Don't feel bad about the dimes missing the FT , just getting some from the 80's is a miracle and you got 1981's ,check the census for FT's from the '80s

PL=Proof-Like which = yes , worth a premium to modern collectors , not much to non-modern collectors . Although moderns aren't fast sellers with high returns unless a particular coin is in demand or is properly marketed to the right audience.

You got a 6-step Proof-Like nickel !!!! That is an excellent grade for any mint set coin ....mine all came from OBW rolls with none from any mint set . You got some real winners in that batch ......some may have been better off NOT being submitted , but you said you are going to fill holes with them in your sets ...you could have saved a few bucks from not sending in those particular coins , but still not bad .
