Finding Two-Bits?

6 posts in this topic

I have seen them before. Some of them in slabs, some raw. They can be identified as a "bit" cut from an 8 Reales coin based on the design that is visible. But for some reason, I want one.

Does anyone know where I can find a genuine 2-bit size cut piece from an 8 Reale coin (Pillar Dollar) from the 18th century? Does anyone know who might be able to help me find one?

All I know is that it will be an interesting search!

In the late 60's/early 70's they were available fairly regularly. But diring the mid to late seventies they seem to have vanished and I have seen very few of them since then. I've seen a few of them at the Chicago international show in the past couple of years, but most of those have been bits that were countermarked to be used in other locations.

Thanks Conder... I was thinking about going to the next Chicago International show. This might be a convincing reason to go!
