1989 Thick and Thin 9 cents???

Buried in with old odds n' ends today I found 2 1989D cents in 2x2's that are a nice original red and I assume unc. What I am questioning is that they are identified on the holders as, "1989-D Thick 9 (Large date) and 1989-D Thin 9 (Small Date). I can't find any mention of these "varieties" in the red book or Numismedia. Does anyone know about these varieties and are they at all scarce...or even "legit"? Lincoln cents are not my thing. I can try a scan but I'm not sure that the differences will be obvious. What I DID note (I think) is that the 1 on the "Large Date" seems to be higher than the 1 in the "Small Date", and the curl of the last 9's are different. Many thanks. RI AL

I was thinking it is most likely the result of different strike and/or die wear states.
