1861 Toned Gold $5

13 posts in this topic

I have a PCGS MS62 $5 1901-S liberty gold piece that has some silver streaks on the reverse, but has an overally redish gold appearance. I'm not sure this is toning per se -- but it just has a different color than the bright yellow gold I mostly see.

I also have a $2.50 CAC/NGC AU53 1834 gold piece which has some orange peel toning on the obverse.

Here are pictures of both

I've seen red toning several times but I have also heard of green toning. Anyone ever see any?

I have seen photos from Heritage Auctions (not my coins)

It was a real find. The dealer sold it for a slightly high AU 58 money (it's NGC 58). But I thought it was worth it!
