What is the grading critiria for nickel steps, Say, A 5cent coin has nice deep steps 5/6 but there is a nick that crosses these steps downward, would the nick void out the step designation? same Question for dimes.

NGC will regard the coin as 5FS so long as five steps are clearly defined from left to right. A mark may be on the steps, that is laying on the top of the steps. If that mark is deep enough to cause a bridge between the steps, then the coin will not receive the 5FS or 6FS designation.
