How did Eliasberg do it for only $450,000?

I'm more in awe of the fact that he obtained one of every US coin in just 16 years (as I read in NN).

That is true, but misleading. The bulk of his collection came from buying the Clapp Collection which had been built over two generations. It wasn't until after buying it that it was realized that the possibility of a complete set might be within reach.

 

What a lot of peopledon't know is that the Eliasberg collection was not complete. It was missing one coin, ad I am not talking about the 1870-S half dime that wasn't discovered until after he died. Believe it or not the one coin missing was the 1865 nickel three cent piece. He had a full set of proofs, but the1865 in the set was a pattern and not a regular issue.
