1824 Bust Half Overton 113

I'm always on the lookout for really nice G-EF busties, because they are not easy to find. Their not too too difficult, but they're not easy. You can go through 50 coins in a dealers box and find only one that counts.

 

Here's one that I picked up with a little bit of a premium. It's an 1824 O-113. I'm not a variety collector, so not privy enough in my memory to know the difference between a 113 which is an R1, and a 113a, which is an R2. The coin was sold to me as a 113a. It is not. The 113a is a 113 that's been die lapped, and the interesting hallmark I'll talk about here, will be missing from the 113a.

 

The hallmark of 113 is a 'worm' as Peterson calls it ("Eagle drops the worm"), an irregular break above the left wing. Reverse L. This has an obverse ``. where star 7 is bigger than the others and very close to the die cap. Also the point of 4 and the serif of 2 are practically touching. Overton mentions die swelling, evident on the neck, and I believe you can see this.

 

The coin is very organic, naturally toned, evenly worn, and I'd call it an EF40.
