MY NGC submission down the tubes!!

12 posts in this topic

I just sent in (21) 2007 coins. I sent in 4 SMS coins pulled from the 2007 Uncirculated coin set.

I also sent in 17 Business strikes pulled right from rolls of coins I got at the bank.

I spent many hours going thru roll after roll to find the very best ones.

Well today I find out NGC graded only 10 of them business strike and 11 SMS coins.

I don’t know what to do.

Is it really that hard to tell a satin finish coin from a regular one!!

I had a similar experience and I openned a same discussion back in Nov.

http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2040315&page=0&fpart=1

In fact, Conder101 gave a fair judgement on this and I quote "And the simple answer is that even the grading services can't tell hem apart with a great deal of certainty. And since they have a greater liability calling it a high end BS, if they aren't absolutely sure, call it a low end SF. "

No matter, I only collect BS coins, not SMS becasue I think these coins are 'artificial'.

Were any of the rolls purchased after the SMS sets were released? It could be possible that people were searching for the best SMS coins and put the rest back in circulation.

This is not my niche, but I read multiple times on these and the PCGS boards that the determination between a business strike coin and an SMS coin can be mighty difficult.

Yes, it can really be that hard to tell them apart. The Mint supposedly uses the SMS dies after their mint set life has run its course to produce business strikes. Also, early business strikes have the appearance of being SMS.

Call NGC and ask for the coins to be reviewed.

I would also call NGC, however, I've had a terrible time getting them to differentiate between the two. They have a very hard time telling them apart...though I have NEVER personally seen a business strike that actually resembled the Satin Finish. Worn dies become frosty over time, but nothing like on the satin finish coins. There are fundamental differences beond the obvious satiny surface texture. NGC probably does't see the coins long enough to tell them apart.

Many many 1965-67 SMS designated coins are also business strikes.

I got the rolls at the bank. There were all head to tails rolls, all same year and mint mark.

Grading an SMS coin as a BS coin is very bad for BS coin collectors to TPGs tend to fail toward SMS if they aren't sure. In fact, PCGS tends to call everything SF in certain series unless submitted before the SMS coins come out or in a sealed mint package. It would be too easy to slip an SMS coin into a batch of BS coins and make the pop 1 MS68 in the series.

I would never mix them up on one submission (in the future).

I just called them and they pulled the order, because I guess they hadn't shipped

them yet. So now my order is in quality control again. Well I will cross my fingers

and see what happens. Here is the list of coins.

The ones in bold are SMS coins and the rest are BS coins. I hope the Utah and

When I sent the coins in the SMS coins were first and the BS were second.

NGC must have put them in a different order.

Trust me I will never do that again. I just didn't think there would be a problem.

I always take the coins out of the mint cello and place them in the 2 x 2, so that I can look at the coins better.
