What accounts for the yellow/gold tint on some of the older coins? (ex. shown) Does it affect grade positively or negatively? As always, any input welcome. Thanks.

It's toning!

You can read about the science of toning on board member TomB's website, www.ivyleaguecoin.com

Depending on the type of toning, it can effect the grade positively or negatively. Very attractive toning on coins sometimes boosts the grade, while unattractive toning may reduce the grade.

There are a number of factors that can cause a coin to tone........heat, humidity, the composition of the material in which it is stored, even the rinse that is applied to the planchets by the Mint. Perhaps someone more familiar with the specific cause for this particular coin will respond.
