Which buffalo nickel really is THE key in upper grades (AU and up)?

1926-? or the 1924-S?

In reading through a recent auction catalog, I saw them call the 1926-S the undisputed key. Undisputed my foot! "Pop reports" notwithstanding, I think the 1924-S is the key.

Agreed James... many of the condition rarity buffalo's, fly right under the radar.

Talking to an advanced buffalo collector a few months ago, he said he had been looking for a gem 27-s for five years.

BTW the same argument can be made for just about any S mint mark from 1918 to 1926.

I would say that for a pretty, well struck coin, the 27-D, 26-D and 25-D are vastly harder to come by than either the 26-S or 24-S. Of those two pieces, the 24-S is unquestionably the most difficult to find well struck with lovely surfaces.
